The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, commonly referred to as FIRE, has initiated a lawsuit on behalf of six professors from California community colleges.
The aim of the lawsuit is to halt the implementation of statewide regulations, which were adopted in March 2023, mandating the endorsement and instruction of politicized interpretations of “diversity, equity, and inclusion.”
The newly enacted regulations resulted in amendments to Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations. These revisions introduced standards related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility into the assessment and tenure evaluation processes for college employees. According to the lawsuit, this alteration implies that over 54,000 professors affiliated with the California community college system will be compelled to integrate “anti-racist” viewpoints into their teaching methodologies.
