Chicago Democrat Mayor: City Cannot Support More Migrants Without Federal Help

Chicago Democrat Mayor Brandon Johnson is again asking the federal government to expedite work permits for asylum-seekers, saying the city won’t be unable to support more mirgrants beyond the roughly 30,000 it already has if changes aren’t made.
Johnson made the plea Wednesday at a press conference where he was joined by Democrat Gov. J.B. Pritzker.
“Let me state this clearly: The city of Chicago cannot go on welcoming new arrivals safely and capably without significant support and immigration policy changes,” Johnson said. “This change would be a commonsense measure that would provide greater opportunities for (new) arrivals, immigrants, to build their lives here in the state of Illinois.”
