In Washington, D.C., car-related crimes have surged this year, as reported by the Metropolitan Police Department, with motor vehicle thefts experiencing a 93% increase compared to the previous year.
As of Monday, the tally for car thefts in 2023 stands at a minimum of 6,317, and of these incidents, at least 905 are categorized as carjackings—a violent criminal act.
The incidence of carjackings has doubled since the previous year, which recorded more than 400 reported cases in November 2022.
