Over 6,000 People Join Migrant Caravan In Mexico Ahead Of Blinken’s Visit To The Capital

The group, estimated to be around 6,000 people strong, is the largest caravan in over a year. Many families with small children are among the participants. The trek began on Christmas Eve, with the group setting off from the city of Tapachula, near the southern border with Guatemala.

This wave of migrants isn’t a new phenomenon. In May, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador agreed to take in immigrants from countries like Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua, who had been denied entry into the United States due to their failure to follow the new legal routes for asylum and other types of migration.

Despite this agreement, which was intended as a stopgap measure to slow down a post-pandemic surge in migration, it’s clear that more needs to be done. The number of migrants has risen sharply once again, and the current surge shows no signs of stopping.

At the southwest border of the United States, migrants have been detained at a rate of up to 10,000 per day this month. This has put pressure on the Biden administration to take decisive action to address the situation, which many are calling a humanitarian crisis.

Secretary Blinken’s upcoming visit to Mexico City, where he will be negotiating new agreements to manage the influx of migrants seeking entry into the United States, could not be more timely. It remains to be seen what measures will be put in place to address this ongoing crisis, but one thing is clear: action must be taken, and it must be taken soon.
