During the campaign and throughout his presidency, Joe Biden has cultivated an image as a supporter of working-class Americans, publicly backing striking auto workers and calling to raise taxes on the wealthy. But after securing a key union endorsement this month, Biden will travel to Florida to hobnob with Miami elites at an event costing as much as $250,000 per head to attend.
Biden joined strikers on the picket line last year as the United Auto Workers conducted a major strike against Detroit firms, including Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis. Earlier this week, the UAW reciprocated his support, endorsing his 2024 presidential campaign.
While the endorsement could prove a boon to Biden’s efforts to shore up support in the rust belt, especially battleground Michigan, it won’t necessarily translate to substantive financial backing. For that, Biden’s supporters appear to be looking farther south.
