On Friday, Texas Republican Rep. Chip Roy proposed a bill that aims to restrict non-citizens from participating in federal elections.
According to the Protecting American Voters Act, which is supported by Republican Reps. Matt Rosendale of Montana, Pete Sessions of Texas and Michael Burgess of Texas, state officials will have access to necessary information to verify citizenship during voter registration.
The bill will require federal agencies to provide information from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ SAVE system, which confirms naturalized citizens’ identities upon request from states. The legislation also permits states to check the citizenship status of individuals who are already registered to vote, allowing officials to amend current registration records by eliminating those who are not citizens.
