New York City Mayor Eric Adams has proposed the suspension of the city’s long-standing “right to shelter” regulation due to the challenges faced in providing housing, food, and legal services to over 40,000 migrants with limited federal assistance.
In a submission made by the New York City Law Department on Tuesday night, an application was filed requesting modifications to the “right to shelter” regulation. The city’s resources have been significantly strained by the influx of migrants, placing unprecedented demands on its capacity to meet their needs.
Mayor Adams defended the proposal, stating that the city is unable to provide care for an unlimited number of people and is already stretched thin.
