Congress Chooses Memorial Day Break Over Staying For Debt Deal Negotiations

With talks lingering on the debt crisis, Congress is expected to take the Memorial Day weekend off and return home for a few days rest.

The move suggests both that little is happening in the negotiations and that House Republicans don’t buy the White House claims that a crisis is at hand.

“If some new agreement is reached between President [Joe] Biden and Speaker McCarthy, members will receive 24 hours notice in the event we need to return to Washington for any additional votes, either over the weekend or next week,” said House leadership.
