Adam Schiff, who rose to prominence as the Democrats’ leading anti-Trump voice in the House, has clinched a promotion to the Senate, according to The Associated Press.
Schiff easily won over his Republican opponent, former baseball star Steve Garvey — a victory that was so anticipated that the Burbank Democrat spent much of the general election campaigning and raising money for out-of-state Senate Democrats in an effort to cozy up to his future colleagues.
A former federal prosecutor who centered most of his House career on national security, Schiff repositioned himself in the Trump era as a self-styled defender of democracy. His roles in the first Trump impeachment and the Jan. 6 commission catapulted him to national prominence, making him a fundraising juggernaut and an influential Democratic voice.
The fame has also made him a repeated target of the former president’s ire, who recently called him “the enemy from within.”
