Tesla CEO Elon Musk joked about how MSNBC would change if he bought it from Comcast.
Last week, Comcast announced it will spin off a large chunk of NBCUniversal cable channels, including MSNBC. Donald Trump Jr. began the rumors that Musk could buy the network Friday with a joke posted on X, which Musk owns.
“Hey @elonmusk I have the funniest idea ever!!!” Trump wrote in response to a post that said Comcast was looking to sell MSNBC.
“How much does it cost?” Musk replied.
“I mean it can’t be much. Look at the ratings,” Trump responded.
“The most entertaining outcome, especially if ironic, is most likely,” Musk wrote on the spiraling rumors. That’s when comedian Joe Rogan piped up.
“If you buy MSNBC I would like Rachael Maddow’s job,” Rogan said. “I will wear the same outfit and glasses, and I will tell the same lies.”
“Ok @elonmusk & @joerogan. Since this is getting interesting I’ll throw my hat in the ring as well. I’ll mimic Lawrence O’Donnell … minus the castration of course,” Trump responded. “That’s a bridge too far.”
Rogan’s suggestion received more than 320,000 likes on X. Musk’s posts on the topic are received with as many as 500,000 likes as well.
“I think I started something here. The amount of people that want this to happen is incredible!!!!” Trump wrote on Sunday.

On election night, MSNBC reported more than 6 million viewers, an Election Day record for the network. Fox News held the lion’s share that night with almost 13.6 million viewers. There were 4.4 million alone in the coveted 25-54 demographic.
However, Comcast is likely considering the spinoff due to the overall decline in cable subscriptions. A projected 70 million households will keep their cable by the end of this year, while in 2010, shortly before Comcast bought NBCUniversal and its networks, 105 million households had cable. Meanwhile, Fox News has about 75% of the cable news prime-time viewership.
