America’s Largest Teachers’ Union Recommends ‘Gender Queer’ Book For Summer Reading List

The National Education Association (NEA), the country’s largest teachers’ union, recently stirred controversy by including two contentious books on its list of summer reading recommendations.

On Monday, the NEA announced that “Gender Queer” and “White Fragility” were among the selections for its “Great Summer Reads for Educators!” list. “Gender Queer,” authored by Maia Kobabe, is a graphic memoir that explores themes of gender and sexual identity.

Notably, the book attained the number one position on the American Library Association’s banned books list in 2022.
