Three members of the University of Wyoming swimming and diving team died in a single-vehicle crash on Thursday, according to the university.

The accident occurred on U.S. Highway 287, approximately 10 miles south of the Wyoming-Colorado border, the University of Wyoming reported. Two other members of the men’s swimming and diving team sustained injuries in the crash, but authorities do not consider their injuries to be life-threatening.

The crash took place between Livermore and Virginia Dale, Colorado, at the junction of Highway 287 and Red Mountain Road, as per reports from the Colorado State Patrol.

While authorities are still investigating the circumstances leading up to the accident, initial findings suggest that the driver veered off the road, causing the vehicle to roll multiple times. University of Wyoming President Ed Seidel expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, stating, “We are heartsick at the news of this terrible tragedy for our university, our state, our student-athlete community and, most importantly, the families and friends of these young people. Words are insufficient to express our sadness.”

The university has refrained from disclosing the names of the deceased until their next of kin are informed. University of Wyoming Director of Athletics Tom Burman extended condolences, saying, “My thoughts and prayers are with our swimming and diving student-athletes, coaches, families, and friends. It is difficult to lose members of our University of Wyoming family, and we mourn the loss of these student-athletes. We have counseling services available to our student-athletes and coaches in our time of need.”

The accident remains under investigation, with authorities expected to provide further details in due course.
