A new Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 81 percent of the ex-president’s party believed the charges stemming from his handling of classified documents after leaving the White House were trumped up, as he runs for the White House for a third time.
The number of Republicans who believe the former president is being unfairly targeted vastly exceeds the 30-35 percent of Trump supporters who are estimated by political analysts to make up his core base.
Some 62 percent of respondents in the Reuters/Ipsos poll, including 91 percent of Democrats and 35 percent of Republicans, said it was believable that Trump illegally stored classified documents at his home in Florida as alleged by prosecutors.
