AMC Apologizes To NC Civil Rights Leader Removed From ‘The Color Purple’ Screening

Rev. William J. Barber II, a prominent civil rights leader and minister, was asked to leave a screening of “The Color Purple” at an AMC Fire Tower 12 theater in Greenville, North Carolina, on Tuesday. Barber, who has an arthritic disability known as ankylosing spondylitis, was escorted out by police after attempting to bring his own chair into the theater.

In an interview with Religion News Service, Barber explained that he has used his own chair in the past because he is unable to sit in low chairs or wheelchairs. “My chair has been everywhere…It’s a need that I have because I face a very debilitating arthritic condition,” he said.

The incident occurred when employees at the theater asked Barber to leave his chair outside the theater. Barber refused and an argument reportedly ensued. A call was made to the Greenville police department at 3:20 pm regarding trespassing at the theater. When a police supervisor arrived on the scene, he spoke with Barber and the matter was resolved with no charges filed.

Video footage of the incident, which shows an officer speaking to Barber in the dark theater as other attendees look on, was shared on social media. The footage shows Barber remaining calm and complying with the officer’s requests. “I’m not resisting. I’m not a violent person. I’ll walk out. Take me by my arm and walk me out,” he said.

Barber, who attended the screening with his 90-year-old mother, expressed disappointment with the theater’s treatment of him and his disability. “It was humiliating and dehumanizing for me and her,” he said. AMC Theatres has since apologized to Barber for the incident.

Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic condition that causes inflammation in the joints and ligaments of the spine, according to the National Institutes of Health. It can lead to severe pain, stiffness, and loss of mobility. Barber has been a vocal advocate for disability rights and access for people with disabilities.
