Former President Barack Obama has penned a letter expressing his support for LGBTQ+ books in children’s schools and public libraries, as several Republican-led states have been implementing restrictions on such materials, triggering parental concerns.
In a tweet, Obama highlighted the significance of books that have influenced his own life and the lives of countless others. He acknowledged the challenges faced by librarians in their efforts to provide a diverse array of viewpoints, opinions, and ideas to all individuals, emphasizing their crucial role in ensuring access to a broad range of literature.
“Today, some of the books that shaped my life—and the lives of so many others—are being challenged by people who disagree with certain ideas or perspectives,” Obama tweeted. “And librarians are on the front lines, fighting every day to make the widest possible range of viewpoints, opinions, and ideas available to everyone.”
