Biden Selects New CDC Director To Replace Walensky

In a statement on Friday, President Biden announced his selection of Mandy Cohen to assume the leadership of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) following the departure of Rochelle Walensky later this month.

Cohen, who previously served as the health secretary of North Carolina for a period of five years before transitioning to the private sector, will step into the role of CDC director during a time when the agency is facing heightened scrutiny for its handling of the COVID-19 response.

Of particular concern is the agency’s communication of new information to the public. President Biden expressed confidence in Cohen’s capabilities, stating, “Dr. Cohen is a distinguished physician and esteemed healthcare leader with a wealth of experience in guiding large and intricate organizations. She has an established record of safeguarding the health and safety of Americans.”
