Blinken Goes To China, Says US Does Not Support Taiwan’s Independence

Secretary of State Antony Blinken, following a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, restated the United States’ support for the “One China” policy on Monday. Blinken emphasized that the U.S. does not endorse Taiwanese independence during a press conference.

In his statement, Blinken said, “We do not support Taiwan independence. We maintain our opposition to any unilateral changes to the status quo by either side. We continue to advocate for the peaceful resolution of differences across the Taiwan Strait. We remain committed to fulfilling our responsibilities under the Taiwan Relations Act, which includes ensuring Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities.”

Blinken further expressed concerns about China’s provocative actions in recent years, dating back to 2016. He highlighted that these actions have raised apprehensions among numerous countries, not solely the United States. The underlying concern is that a crisis involving Taiwan could potentially trigger an economic downturn with global repercussions.
