The Body Mass Index has for years been downgraded as a gold standard of whether a person is the correct weight for such key factors as gender and height.
The American Medical Association, a highly regarded U.S. healthcare group, more recently said the BMI was too broad to reflect an individual’s health and that is was based on non-Hispanic white bodies and doesn’t consider other races.
As a result, the AMA is urging doctors to stop using the index as the primary measurement for a healthy bodyweight, citing its ‘racist’ roots.
