U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, the Colorado Republican, is making a big move. Boebert has announced that she is abandoning her reelection campaign in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District and is instead going to run in the state’s 4th Congressional District.
Boebert’s move comes after she won her previous election in the 3rd District by a narrow margin of just 546 votes. The 3rd District has a slight Republican lean, nine percentage points in favor of the GOP. Conversely, the 4th District, where Boebert will now run, leans heavily Republican, by a margin of 27 percentage points.
Boebert’s decision to switch districts was announced via a Facebook video in which she stated that she arrived at this decision after a lot of prayer, tough conversations, and gaining some perspective. She added that the move would allow her to continue fighting for conservative causes and her children’s future.
Boebert’s chances of winning reelection in the 3rd District appeared bleak – her boisterous behavior in Congress, including interrupting President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address and making an Islamophobic joke about Democratic U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota – had negatively impacted her image.
To make matters worse, Boebert was recently ejected from a performance of the musical “Beetlejuice” in Denver for disruptive behavior. Surveillance cameras captured Boebert and her male companion apparently groping each other during the musical. Boebert initially denied that she was vaping, but she later apologized after video recordings of the incident were released.
Despite the scandal, Boebert has been trying to moderate her image and pivot her campaign message to focus more on her legislative work in Congress. Nevertheless, her behavior and the recent events surrounding her have become a major distraction to her reelection chances.
