Boston, Mass. Mayor Michelle Wu, a native of Chicago and graduate of Barrington, Ill. High School, is facing criticism over her office sending out invitations to members of the Boston City Council to attend a “Elected of Color Holiday Party.”
Denise DosSantos, Wu’s Education and Outreach Manager, sent the original invitation email to all members of the City Council, writing, “On behalf of Mayor Michelle Wu, I cordially invite you and a guest to the Elected of Color Holiday Party on Wednesday, December 13th at 5:30 p.m. at the Parkman House, 33 Beacon Street.”
Wu, who’s husband is White, said that the “invite was not meant to be sent to White council members,” reported Fox News. The invitations to those white members were reportedly “rescinded about 15 minutes” after they were originally sent.
There are seven White members of the city council.
The daughter of Taiwanese immigrants, Wu, 38, was born on the south side of Chicago and was valedictorian at Barrington High School, where she graduated in 2003. Named an Illinois Presidential Scholar, she then attended Harvard University, where she received her J.D.
