Attorneys for a California man who allegedly planned to kill Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh said on Wednesday that their client will plead guilty in court.
Nicholas Roske was arrested outside of the Supreme Court justice’s home with various weapons and burglary equipment in 2022, and told detectives that he wanted to “give his life a purpose” by assassinating Kavanaugh.
The attorneys told U.S. District Court Judge Deborah Boardman of their client’s intent in a letter reported by The Daily Signal, and recommended the new plea be entered on Monday. He was scheduled to stand trial in June.
“We write to inform the Court that Mr. Roske wishes to plead guilty to the one-count Indictment pending against him,” they wrote.
Roske was reportedly motivated to try and assassinate the Supreme Court Justice after the high court appeared poised to overturn Roe v. Wade. He was also allegedly inspired by the Uvalde school shooting in Texas that same year. But he decided to change his plans after spotting two deputy marshals outside Kavanaugh’s house.
He was allegedly carrying a “tactical knife, a pistol with two magazines and ammunition, pepper spray, zip ties, a hammer, screwdriver, nail punch, crowbar, pistol light, [and] duct tape,” at the time of his arrest, according to the Justice Department.
