California’s Released Prisoners Add To Homeless Crisis

Over the past two years, a total of 36,400 inmates have been discharged from California state prisons without having a fixed place to reside, according to an analysis conducted by NBC News.
Among these individuals, approximately 8,900 were sent to Los Angeles County, accounting for one-quarter of the total releases.
The number of former prisoners without homes who arrived in Los Angeles County saw a significant increase, almost doubling from 1,621 in 2019 to 2,945 in 2020. This surge in releases occurred as officials expedited the process in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. An additional 2,371 individuals were released without stable housing last year, as per information provided by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
