Chicago Gives Migrants $9K Each To Cover Housing Costs

The city of Chicago is allocating $9,000 in temporary housing assistance to undocumented migrants in response to the rising need for shelter services. Chicago had already spent a substantial $7.2 million on staffing shelters within a one-week period, primarily due to the increasing numbers of migrants seeking refuge.
The situation in the city has grown more challenging as over 11,000 migrants are currently residing in shelters, with an additional 4,000 individuals staying in police stations and O’Hare International Airport due to the overflow of migrants.
To address this issue, the state of Illinois is now contributing to the costs of providing temporary housing for undocumented migrants. This assistance includes a $9,000 allocation for housing and rental support over a six-month period, as confirmed by Cristina Pacione-Zayas, Chicago’s deputy chief of staff.
