Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson launched a new initiative this week to relocate immigrants from police stations to churches, aiming to assist approximately 340 individuals in preparation for the upcoming winter months.
Announcing the Unity Initiative on Tuesday, Mayor Johnson outlined the plan to transition hundreds of immigrants from police stations and the airport to local churches, providing temporary shelter and support for legal services, as well as assistance in searching for housing and employment.
As of Wednesday’s updated city data, approximately 1,200 immigrants are currently sleeping on the floors of police stations and at O’Hare International Airport. Additionally, slightly over 13,000 immigrants are residing in city shelters.
