Chiefs Great Ed Budde Dead At 89

Former Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman, Ed Budde, has recently passed away at 89 years old, according to his family’s announcement through the team. The cause of death is unknown at this time. Budde’s career in football spanned 14 years with the Chiefs, where he was an integral part of the team’s success.

Budde was a part of the team that brought pro football to Kansas City, as he had never missed a game in the first nine years of his career. His honors include being recognized as an All-Star, a Pro-Bowler, and a Super Bowl Champion. After his playing days, Budde remained connected to the Chiefs organization and was a founding member of the Kansas City Ambassadors.

Selected in the first round of the 1963 AFL Draft, Budde ultimately played for the Chiefs instead of the Philadelphia Eagles. He earned seven Pro Bowl selections and two All-Pro nods during his career, and was on the team when they won the AFL Championship and faced off against the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl I.

“Ed spent his entire 14-year career with the Chiefs, and he was a cornerstone of those early Chiefs teams that brought pro football to Kansas City,” said Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt in a statement. “He was well-loved in the Kansas City community, and he was a great father to Brad, Tionne, and John. My family and the entire Chiefs organization extend our sincere condolences to Carolyn and the Budde family.”

Budde’s contributions to the Chiefs and to Kansas City will always be remembered, as he left a lasting legacy as both a player and a member of the community. He will always be admired for his dedication to the team, his strength and athleticism on the field, and his love for his family and community.
