College towns in the United States have shown overwhelming support for Democrats.
This trend has had significant implications for the Republican Party’s electoral success in key swing states. The American Communities Project (ACP) has conducted extensive research on the voting patterns of 171 college towns, where major colleges or universities play a crucial role in the local economy.
Over the years, these towns have witnessed a substantial increase in Democratic support, with more than two-thirds now leaning towards the Democratic Party. Politico’s analysis of the ACP report further confirms this shift. Out of the 171 college towns, 38 previously Republican-leaning towns have transitioned to Democratic, while 79 Democratic-leaning towns have become even more so. Conversely, only 47 Republican-leaning towns have become more Republican, and a mere six college towns have switched from pro-Democratic to pro-Republican. These findings shed light on the evolving political landscape in college towns across the country.
