Officials “knew” the suspected Gilgo Beach killer was watching them as much as they were eyeing him, so they took strides to keep investigation details under wraps.
“We knew we were playing before an audience of one person,” Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney A. Tierney said Friday at news conference about Rex Heuermann’s arrest.
Heuermann, 59, a married architect and father of two from Massapequa Park, Long Island, was arrested at his midtown Manhattan offices Thursday and charged in the murders of three of the “Gilgo Four,” Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Costello and Megan Waterman. He remains the “prime suspect” in the death of the fourth, Maureen Brainard-Barnes.
