Delaware state Sen. Sarah McBride becomes the first openly transgender person to be elected to Congress, according to reports.
Democratic candidate McBride defeated Republican candidate John Whalen III at 57.6% with 63% reporting, NBC News reports.
Some of McBride’s main issues include affordable healthcare, increasing minimum wage and abortion.
“This historic victory reflects not only increasing acceptance of transgender people in our society, ushered in by the courage of visible leaders like Sarah, but also her dogged work in demonstrating that she is an effective lawmaker who will deliver real results,” LGBT activist Kelley Robinson told the outlet.
