In a new poll conducted by YouGov America, 54% of Americans approved of the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision to bar former President Donald Trump from the 2024 presidential primary ballot. The results also found that a surprising 24% of Republicans approved of the decision.
The court opinion was released on Tuesday evening, stating that Trump was ineligible to run for president again due to the 14th Amendment’s prohibition on insurrectionists holding office.
According to the YouGov survey of 3,492 respondents, 54% of the country approved of the Court’s conclusion, with 38% strongly approving and a combined 35% either strongly or somewhat disapproving.
While the majority of Democrats, at 84%, supported Trump’s removal from the ballot, the poll notably also showed that 48% of independents and 24% of Republicans agreed with the ruling.
The exact wording of the question posed in the survey is as follows: “Do you approve or disapprove of the Colorado Supreme Court ruling that Donald Trump can’t appear on the state’s 2024 Republican presidential primary ballot because his actions leading up to the Jan. 6, 2021 takeover of the Capitol amount to insurrection or rebellion against the United States?”
The case appears headed for the United States Supreme Court, probably on an expedited schedule. While some experts, including Fox News contributor Jonathan Turley, predict that the decision will be overturned, others, such as former federal judge Michael Luttig, argue that the Colorado jurists made the correct decision.
