Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN), who has considered a potential primary challenge against President Joe Biden in the 2024 election, has decided to step down from his leadership role in the House of Representatives, as confirmed by a spokesperson on Sunday.
Phillips, aged 54, is among the few elected Democrats at the federal level who openly advocate for a competitive process within the party for the presidential nomination. He has expressed concerns about Biden’s electability, citing the president’s age of 80, and has argued that it’s time for a new generation of leaders to emerge.
While Phillips has not ruled out the possibility of challenging Biden, he has acknowledged that he may not be the ideal candidate due to his relatively low name recognition and limited support among many establishment Democrats.
