FBI Records Reveal Irish Threats To Kill Queen Elizabeth II During Yosemite Tour

In 1983, Queen Elizabeth II visited San Francisco and Yosemite National Park during the only trip to California she’d take in her lifetime. Recently released documents from the FBI revealed that she faced potential assassination attempts during this time.
The FBI documents were released Tuesday, and contain preparations from the Secret Service on the queen’s 1983 tour of the United States with her husband, Prince Philip. One leg of that tour included a trip to California, in which the queen visited Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, San Francisco and Yosemite National Park.
Along her trip, protestors rallied against Britain’s role in the Troubles in Northern Ireland, which was at its height during the time. Notably, 5,000 protestors gathered in Golden Gate Park while the queen dined on caviar and goose liver at a banquet inside the de Young museum.
