House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) issued a direct challenge to conservative members of the Republican Party during a closed-door meeting on Thursday.
The meeting, exclusive to Republican members, addressed topics including the impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden and the appropriations process.
In response to Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and other conservatives who have threatened to use a motion to vacate to remove him from the role of speaker unless their demands regarding appropriations are met, McCarthy delivered a pointed message. He encouraged them to take action, stating, “If you want to file a motion to vacate, then file the motion,” as recounted by Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL) to reporters after the meeting.
