Jahmeer Beauziel, 17, turned himself in to police on Monday in connection with a brutal beating that took place near Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. He is the fifth teenager to be charged in the attack that was caught on video. Beauziel has been charged with felony battery.
Four other teenagers, Caleb Hensley, 17, Sylvester Hicks Jr., 16, Chinua Leefatt, 15, and Jordan Thompson, 16, were arrested last week and have been charged with the same offense. All except Leefatt are students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The four appeared in court last Friday and were released into the custody of their parents and guardians.
On December 12, 2019, the victim, an 18-year-old, was attacked at North Community Park, which is used as an overflow parking lot for students at the school. Shocking footage of the assault captured the victim being slammed to the pavement and repeatedly beaten.
Police detectives are currently searching for a sixth suspect in the beating. However, the motive for the attack remains unclear.
According to Coral Springs Police Sgt. Ernesto Bruna, “It was an argument that started in school, and unfortunately that led to this event.” At this stage, authorities have not revealed further details about the argument that led to the violent incident.
The attack took place near Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where a deadly school shooting occurred on February 14, 2018. 17 students, teachers, and staff members were killed by a gunman who is now serving multiple life sentences without the possibility of parole.
