Florida Dem Faces Congressional Probe Over Campaign Finance Violations

The House Committee on Ethics is launching a probe into U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick’s alleged campaign finance violations and other regulatory breaches during her elections in 2022.

The Tamarac Democrat won Florida’s 20th Congressional District in January 2022 in a Special Election and later secured a full two-year term in the General Election the same year. However, the Office of Congressional Ethics has flagged questionable activities by the freshman lawmaker in both races.

The House Committee on Ethics has created an Investigative Subcommittee to look into the matter, headed by committee Chair, Mississippi Republican U.S. Rep. Michael Guest, and its ranking members.

The subcommittee will examine allegations of campaign finance violations in connection with Cherfilus-McCormick’s 2022 Special Election and 2022 re-election campaigns.

In addition to campaign finance, the subcommittee will investigate accusations of failure to appropriately disclose the required information on statements to be filed with the House and accepting voluntary service for official work from an individual not employed in her congressional office.

This announcement comes after the Ethics subcommittee unanimously voted to investigate Cherfilus-McCormick. The freshman lawmaker hasn’t released a statement about the probe, and it remains unclear what prompted the office to flag Cherfilus-McCormick’s activities.
