Kamala Harris has signalled that black Americans could be paid reparations if she becomes president.
The Democratic nominee said she has ‘clear eyes about the disparities that exist’ between blacks and whites in the US, adding that the controversial policy ‘has to be studied’.
The comments were seized on by rival Donald Trump whose campaign said it proved she was a ‘radical liberal’.
The Republican campaign flagged up a 2020 story on NBC which said the cost of reparations could be as much as $12 trillion (£9.2 trillion).
But Ms Harris told a US podcast that is popular with black men: ‘So my agenda, well, first of all, on the point of reparations, it has to be studied. There’s no question about that. And I’ve been very clear about that position in terms of my immediate plan’.
