Iran Rejects US Claim It Targeted Tanker In Indian Ocean, ‘Baseless’

Iran on Monday denied accusations made by the U.S. that Iran had attacked a chemical tanker off the Gujarat coast on December 23. A spokesperson for Iran’s foreign ministry vehemently rejected the claim, describing it as “baseless.”

The statement comes after the Pentagon released information claiming that a drone launched from Iran had attacked the vessel in the Indian Ocean.

The attack occurred around 10 a.m. on Saturday, approximately 200 nautical miles southwest of Veraval. Although the attack triggered an explosion, fortunately, there were no reported casualties. However, the ship, named CHEM PLUTO, sustained some damage in the subsequent fire caused by the attack.

The CHEM PLUTO is a Liberian-flagged, Japanese-owned, and Netherlands-operated chemical tanker. The vessel was targeted by a one-way attack drone fired from Iran, according to the Pentagon’s statement released on Sunday.

This incident adds tension to the already strained relationship between the US and Iran, with speculation arising as to the motives behind the attack. The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not given a reason for the attack.

The US and Iran have had a contentious relationship since the Islamic Revolution in 1979 and recently, the US has been incorporating sanctions against Iran. In November 2020, Israel accused Iran of being behind the attack on an oil tanker in the Red Sea. Additionally, Iran has previously seized tankers in the Gulf due to a dispute over oil sales.

The attack on the CHEM PLUTO raises concerns about shipping activities in the region, given their significant role in international trade. It is unclear what further actions the US will take in response to the attack, but the incident underscores the continuing tension between the US and Iran.
