California Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom on Sunday announced a multi-state ad campaign against proposals in several Republican-controlled states that he claims are to ban out-of-state travel for abortions and effort to acquire medicine that can terminate a pregnancy.
Newsom says he will not challenge incumbent Democrat President Joe Biden for the 2024 party presidential nomination.
But he continues to appear like a presidential candidate in waiting – whether to replace Biden over perhaps his age of low poll numbers – or just to position himself for 2028.
Newsom’s six-figure ad campaign and an online petition effort are set to begin Monday.
The campaign begins with a TV ad targeting a bill under consideration in Tennessee that if enacted would create a felony offense for adults helping minors obtain an abortion or medications to end early pregnancies without the consent of parents or legal guardians.
Similar legislation is pending in several states that have banned or tightly abortion restrictions including Alabama, Mississippi and Oklahoma.
Newsom will use money from a national political action committee he started last year and $10 million from his state campaign funds, according to the Los Angeles Times.
