Los Angeles County Starts Zero-Bail Policy As Crime Surges

Los Angeles County has implemented a zero-bail system that officially commenced on Sunday. This new system eliminates the practice of determining a defendant’s cash bail amount based on the severity of the crime committed.
Previously, critics of the old policy argued that it favored wealthier individuals who could afford to pay their way out of jail, potentially compromising public safety. However, the new zero-bail system, known as the Pre-Arraignment Release Protocol, is now facing its own share of criticism.
Law-and-order proponents argue that it shifts responsibility away from the justice system, enabling suspects accused of crimes to be swiftly released from custody rather than being held until charges are filed and a trial is scheduled.
