In an unexpected development, the Toronto Blue Jays have made the decision to promote minor-league catcher Brady Deeker following their recent announcement as the first professional baseball player to identify as nonbinary.
Deeker’s call-up comes after participating in just seven games at Triple-A, following two challenging seasons at Double-A where the catcher faced difficulties in hitting, with a collective batting average of .207.
During a press conference, Ross Atkins, the general manager of the Blue Jays, expressed the organization’s enthusiasm, stating, “The Blue Jays organization is thrilled to create a historic moment in baseball and to contribute to the progress of LGBTQ2S+ inclusion. We are proud to lead the way and celebrate diversity at the ballpark every day, embracing the spirit of Pride.”
