Matt Gaetz Tells Government To Withhold His Pay If Government Shuts Down

Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz has taken the step of sending a letter to Catherine Szpindor, the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of the U.S. House of Representatives, in which he requests the withholding of his pay until government funding is secured.
The looming government shutdown, set for midnight on Sunday, October 1st, 2023, has prompted Gaetz to make this request. He has consistently advocated for Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy to pass separate appropriations bills to maintain government funding instead of directing large sums of money to Ukraine.
In his letter, Gaetz cited the constitutional provision that allows members of Congress to continue receiving their pay during a funding lapse and expressed his desire to have his pay suspended until legislation is enacted to resolve the appropriations lapse in its entirety.
