Mexican Officials Use Bulldozers To Clear Migrant Tent Camp At US Border

Mexican officials have used bulldozers to clear out a migrant tent camp alongside the Rio Grande in Matamoros on Wednesday. The camp, which originally housed up to 1,500 migrants, has been gradually vacated in recent months as migrants attempted to cross the Rio Grande to reach the United States.

The eviction of the camp happened as senior US officials met with Mexico’s president at the National Palace in Mexico City to address the increasing influx of migrants to the US border. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador were present, among others.

The operation in Matamoros, according to officials, focused mainly on demolishing abandoned tents. “What we are doing is removing any tents that we see are empty,” Segismundo Doguín, the head of the Mexico’s immigration agency in the region, told The Associated Press. However, one Honduran migrant, identified by his first name, José, claimed that he and his remaining fellows were evicted with only a moment’s notice. “They ran us out… You had to run for your life to avoid an accident,” he said.

Many migrants crossing the Rio Grande have lost their lives, attempting the dangerous river crossing. This week, several incidents saw multiple deaths, including those of children. On Wednesday, nearly 70 migrants were able to cross the river and reach the United States. The details surrounding the crossings are unclear, including any injuries or deaths that may result from those specific attempts.

The US-Mexico meeting that took place at the National Palace in Mexico City had the goal of reducing the numbers of migrants reaching the US border. Officials emphasized that factors such as COVID-19, border restrictions, and economic difficulties faced by migrants may have caused the surge in migration.

The Matamoros migrant camp has become a symbol of the migrant crisis in the region, where thousands of asylum-seekers and migrants have been waiting for a chance to cross the border into the United States. The situation of the Matamoros camp has been described as dire, with limited access to basic necessities like water, sanitation, and healthcare.
