President Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Saturday night reached an “agreement in principal” on a budget and to raise the debt ceiling.
Both acknowledged that getting it passed in the GOP-led House and Democrat-controlled Senate would be a challenged and they urged lawmakers to vote yes in the spirit of compromise and for Americans.
By Sunday morning, essentially every major caucus on Capitol Hill raised objections to the deal.
“We still have a lot of work to do but I believe this is an agreement in principle that’s worthy of the American people,” McCarthy said.
Said Biden: “The agreement represents a compromise, which means not everyone gets what they want,” Biden said in the statement. “That’s the responsibility of governing.”
