MYC Migrant Crisis Could Soon Reach $12B

New York City’s migrant population is projected to double by June 2024, resulting in the city accommodating approximately 100,000 homeless migrants. The anticipated surge in numbers will correspondingly escalate expenses, with estimates reaching a peak of over $12 billion within the next three years.
In a somber statement at City Hall on Wednesday, Mayor Adams underscored the city’s dire situation, asserting, “We are past our breaking point.” This declaration followed the mayor’s previous appeal to both federal authorities and the local community to collaborate in addressing the ongoing crisis.
Presently, the city expends an average of $383 per night for approximately 25,600 households comprised of asylum seekers. These households encompass diverse compositions, including families with children, adult couples, and individuals. These funds cover essential needs such as housing, sustenance, and other essential services, as reported by city officials.
