NY Gov. Hochul Signs Bill To Start Slavery Reparations Board

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation on Tuesday, initiating the development of a plan for reparations for slavery.

In a statement, Hochul, a Democrat, emphasized the moral obligation to address the painful legacy of slavery in New York and stated that the newly established commission would play a crucial role in these efforts.

The legislation establishes a commission dedicated to studying reparations and racial justice, with a focus on examining the historical injustice of slavery, subsequent discrimination against individuals of African descent, and the ongoing impact of these factors.

During a press conference, Hochul expressed the hope that the commission would present a viable path forward to assist the descendants of New York slaves and address disparities in education, healthcare, and the environment.

She acknowledged the challenging truth that the state had flourished from slavery, urging New Yorkers to confront and reject their role in benefiting from the institution.

The press conference also included Rev. Al Sharpton, who emphasized the significance of the bill in healing the wounds caused by historical marginalization and stressed the importance of dealing with these issues for genuine healing.
