NYC Considers Housing Migrants At Jail Closed After Epstein Suicide

New York City officials are considering a solution to alleviate the strain on overcrowded homeless shelters by repurposing a former federal jail, previously housing mobsters, terrorists, and financial criminals, which was closed following Jeffrey Epstein’s suicide.
This proposal was outlined in a letter dated August 9, addressed to Gov. Kathy Hochul’s administration. The move comes in response to the challenges New York City is facing in managing the influx of approximately 100,000 migrants who have arrived in the city since the past year after crossing the U.S. southern border.
As per legal obligations, the city must provide shelter to those in need. However, with homeless shelters at capacity, Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, has implemented various measures, such as utilizing hotels, converting recreational centers and school gyms into sleeping areas, and establishing temporary accommodations within large tents.
