An American Airlines plane skidded off the runway and into the grass shortly after landing in snowy weather at New York’s Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport on Thursday.
The Embraer E145, carrying 53 passengers, had completed its landing and was taxiing to the terminal around 4 p.m. when it slipped, according to FAA and American Airlines officials.
The incident occurred due to “snowy airfield conditions” resulting from light snowstorms in the area, as stated by an American Airlines spokesperson. Video footage shared on social media depicted emergency service crews responding to the scene, with firefighters assisting passengers onto the snow-covered field.
Fortunately, none of the 50 passengers and three crew members sustained injuries. The airline emphasized its commitment to safety, expressing apologies to customers for any inconvenience.
All passengers disembarked safely and were transported to the terminal by bus, according to the American Airlines spokesperson.
The aircraft had traveled 300 miles from Philadelphia International Airport, but the landing was nearly an hour behind schedule, according to Flightaware data.
