Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday expressed openness to a ceasefire in the Ukraine War, provided such a ceasefire led to a permanent end to the conflict that addressed its root causes.
“We agree with the propositions to stop hostilities. Let me proceed from the fact that such ceasefire should be such that would lead to permanent peace and remove the initial original causes of the crisis,” Putin said, as translated by state media outlet RT.
To be clear, Putin did not commit to an immediate ceasefire and merely agreed to one in principle, should it include specific provisions. His remarks come as Trump envoy Steve Witkoff arrives in Moscow to deliver the terms of a ceasefire proposal negotiated between the U.S. and Ukraine.
