Russian National Charged In US Cyberattack On Infrastructure

The Department of Justice (DOJ) made an announcement on Tuesday, revealing that a Russian national has been charged and sanctioned for his alleged involvement in cyberattacks on critical infrastructure in the United States.

Mikhail Pavlovich Matveev, a Russian national, faces charges related to conspiring to transmit ransom demands, conspiring to damage protected computers and intentionally damaging protected computers.

According to the DOJ’s news release, Matveev is believed to have participated in various conspiracies using three distinct ransomware variants: LockBit, Babuk, and Hive. Using these platforms, he and his associates reportedly transmitted ransom demands and targeted numerous victims across the United States and globally. The victims were primarily individuals working in law enforcement, government agencies, hospitals, and schools.
