Sotomayer Dissent Includes False Claim About Pulse Nightclub Shooting

In a recent opinion for a significant same-sex wedding case, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor made a claim that has been disputed. She asserted that the 2016 mass shooting at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, was motivated by anti-gay prejudice. However, this claim has been contested as false.

The Supreme Court, in a notable 6-3 decision that weighed LGBTQ non-discrimination against First Amendment freedom, ruled on Friday that a Colorado graphic designer is not obligated to create wedding websites for same-sex marriages.

The ruling favored artist Lorie Smith, who had filed a lawsuit against the state of Colorado challenging its anti-discrimination law. This law prohibited businesses that provide services or accommodations to the public from denying service based on a customer’s sexual orientation. The decision of the nation’s highest court provides a significant outcome for this case.
