Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) informed members of the House GOP conference that a rumored bipartisan Senate agreement addressing Ukraine aid and southern border policies would face staunch opposition in the lower chamber.
Senate negotiators have been engaged in discussions to finalize a compromise deal covering aid for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, alongside measures to tackle the migrant crisis at the southern border.
In a letter to House colleagues on Friday, Johnson provided an update on the situation, stating, “If rumors about the contents of the draft proposal are true, it would have been dead on arrival in the House anyway,” as reported by Politico.
Key negotiators, including Sens. James Lankford (R-Okla.), Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.), and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), anticipate releasing the text of the bill early next week.
Conservative Republicans, including Johnson, have consistently expressed dissatisfaction with the rumored contents of the deal. Johnson emphasized House Republicans’ strong opposition to any policy proposal that might encourage illegal immigration.
“I am emphasizing again today that House Republicans will vigorously oppose any new policy proposal from the White House or Senate that would further incentivize illegal aliens to break our laws,” Johnson wrote, according to Politico.
